Missionary Work In A Technology Driven World

As Millennials, technology is our best friend. We take it with us everywhere we go with our smartphones, tablets, Kindles, and laptops. We always have one in our hand and one or two of the others in our backpack or purse.

Why are we so attached to these devices? Because we want to constantly be connected to our friends and kept up to date with what’s going on in the world around us.

These devices and social media have made it so easy for us to do both of those things. But that’s not all. Through the advancement of technology over the last several years, we as young Latter-day Saints are able to fulfill our responsibility of sharing the gospel, of every member being a missionary.

Thousands of full-time missionaries have already been using mobile devices and social media to further the Lord’s work in bringing every soul unto Christ. They use them to plan their weeks and interact with their mission president, local Church leaders, and investigators in their current and past areas. The Church expects more than 32,000 missionaries in more than 162 missions to be using mobile devices by the early part of this year.

Mobile devices and many of the apps you can get on them are also great learning tools for missionaries and soon-to-be missionaries. They can get the scriptures, various manuals, the Ensign, “Preach My Gospel,” and other teaching resources to use before, during, and after their missions. It’s a great way to help enhance the existing tools missionaries already use, and a way for them to continue their studying and ability to teach with their devices long after they’ve taken their nametag off.

Whether you’ve served a mission or not, you too can use technology to help you share gospel messages and teach about the Church and its principles to your family, friends, and followers around the globe. There are tons of ways you can do missionary work through technology, including:

  • Sharing inspirational quotes from Church leaders on Pinterest.
  • Reading a general conference talk and then sharing a quote you liked from it on Twitter.
  • Sharing your favorite scripture or one of the Mormon Messages videos on Facebook.
  • Instagramming a picture of yourself outside of a temple with the hashtag #templetuesday.
  • Writing posts on your blog about different gospel principles.

Technology and social media have made it easier than ever for each of us to be a member missionary. We’re able to use this universal tool to connect and communicate — fast and free communication — with people from all over the world each and every single day. And since we’re so used to using our mobile devices and being on social media platforms countless hours of every day, and are dang good at it, it’s much easier for us to share our testimonies and gospel principles in the language we’re used to using and in places we’re comfortable being in.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf has said, “My dear young friends, perhaps the Lord’s encouragement to ‘open [your] mouths’ might today include ‘use your hands’ to blog and text message the gospel to all the world! … With so many social media resources and a multitude of more or less useful gadgets at our disposal, sharing the good news of the gospel is easier and the effects more far-reaching than ever before.”

The Lord is hastening His work, which is clearly evident as we live in this technology driven world where we’re able to more effortlessly be member missionaries and bring more souls unto Christ.
